Deaf Hear

About DeafHear:

DeafHear (formerly The National Association for the Deaf) is a registered not-for-profit charity established in 1964. DeafHear works to improve the lives of Deaf and Hard of hearing persons and their families, and to support professionals and other organisations working with them.

DeafHear is a ‘Centre of Excellence for Deafness’, provided through a national network of resource centres. We offer information on all aspects of deafness and also carry out specialist services. DeafHear campaigns and advocates for improved health and education services and better access to society for all deaf and hard of hearing people. Over 30,000 people avail of DeafHear services every year.

Services Provided by DeafHear Include:

  • Family and Support Services (Social Work, Counselling, Respite and Family Activities).
  • Assistive Technology – special alarms, doorbells and listening devices.
  • Communication Therapy for those with acquired hearing loss.
  • Sign Language Classes throughout Ireland.
  • Information and Advice on all aspects of deafness and hearing loss.
  • A Mental Health Service accessible through Irish Sign Language.

DeafHear Campaigns and Advocacy played a major role in the government decision to introduce Universal Newborn Hearing Screening in Ireland in 2011 and also in additional resources being allocated to improve HSE Audiology Services.
