CHAIRMAN'S ADDRESS
Frank Flannery
Welcome to the newsletter which will be published regularly to communicate the work of our organisation and its increasingly significant impact in the world of physical and sensory disability in Ireland.
Since its inception five years ago, our organisation has made tremendous strides, both in addressing the traditional fragmentation in our sector and ensuring that service providers operate in a more professional and businesslike manner.
We can now speak with one voice to further the aspirations of our clients with Government, as well as the quality of the services they receive. This has given us a greater say than ever before in the formulation of policy.
Perhaps the most tangible effect of this partnership approach to date has been the process of identifying and eliminating core deficits borne by the providers of vital services which is now resulting in more realistic funding levels across the sector.
The strong relationship forged between the Association and key decision makers in the political sphere has also resulted in increased representation for our members on important departmental and National Disability Authority bodies.
We have also used the Association as a vehicle for collective submissions that have had considerable impact in many areas such as the draft National Disability Service Standards, the Companies Bill and the National Physical and Sensory Disability Database.
In the months ahead we are geared up to continue playing a pivotal role on crucial issues such as the public debate on the Disabilities Bill; the health sector reform programme and new legislation governing charities.
Greater cohesion has also reduced overlapping in many service areas, as well as enabling the development of continuous improvement and best practice throughout the sector, thereby opening up opportunities for even more world-class services for people with disabilities.
All of this bears testament to the fact that this is a time of intense activity for our association, due in no small measure to the crucial importance of the opportunities that have been created for the physical and sensory disability sector.
The purpose of this publication is to keep you fully abreast of all the major developments taking place in that regard and I hope you find it to be both interesting and informative.
